Has anybody used door inserts rigged up with quick disconnect hinges.

I thought it would be slick to be able to quickly interchange steel doors with inserts if it was possible, but I've never seen more than pictures of either the hinges or inserts.

Funny you should ask about quick hinges, I am in the process of having patterns made up for hinges that would be similar to J**p hinges. I hope to go into a small production of them within the next 6 months. They would be the exact size, shape and weight as original hinges but unlike others I have personally seen, these will be one piece. The others are either welded together at the pin section or are made of flat steel that has been pressed to get the angle of the hinge. Mine will be cast steel and have also been professionally engineered (it helps to have a metallurgical engineer in the family). So, to answer your question, yeah, I have thought about it and am in process of doing it. I will keep you updated if you want me to, just PM me and let me know.

I just got done cutting up an old set of hinges and re-welding them so the doors can lift off.

They work pretty good... it took a while to get things adjusted so they lift off cleanly.

This weekend there is a big truck show nearby in Carlisle PA and I hope to pick up a pair of the inserts.

The only problem I see is that the inserts are made to be used with the hinges taken off along with the doors. I think I will have to notch the inserts because half of the hinge will be left on the frame once the door is off.

I will post results.

What I was thinking of (don't know if it would work 'cause I haven't seen either) is combining the inserts with hinges. Making kind of a door insert/safari door.

A guy up the street from me did that with a Blazer and it looked pretty good. It was actually the old door with a cut out for safari style doors built into it. It took him a lot of time to get the doors right and he could open both the safari portion or put the cut part out and use it as a regular door as well. But it took a lot of work and I think he said he went through 4 or 5 doors to get it right.

Do you think it might be easier to do with the inserts? Since that part is already done?
