78 Ford Bronco 351M

I've been doing a build up on this Bronco. The first thing I did when I bought the truck was make sure i had a good motor. New plugs, plug wires, cap, botton, fuel filter, a lil carb cleaner and some adjustments and she was running fine. I proceded on my rebuild and today I started it, drove it, pulled it in the garage ands shut it off. I went to start it back a few hours later and hit the switch it started kinda flooded, and hasn't ran right since. When it flooded, and didnt start back up after a few tries I pulled the plugs out one by one and, cleaned them. still no good. When I did that it backfired through the exaust a couple of times. It will start now but to keep it running you have to keep it to the floor just to make it idle. All help is appreceated. Thanks all...

Sounds like the timing is severly ********. Since it ran good when shut off the last time, and then the trouble started on the next start-up, I'd suspect the distributor gear roll pin sheared just enough to move the timing. It's easy enough to check, you just have to pull the distributor and examine the pin.

Best to first check the timing with a light though, to confirm it's actually out of time.

It sounds like the roll pin sheared like Runnin mentioned. Also , what kind of carburetor are you running? If you have a needle and seat stuck SHUT, it could be running out of fuel and could backfire. Or the float may have a hole in it and keeping the needle and seat OPEN. It might run this way but very poorly if you had the pedal all the way down with too much fuel.
