the guy who owned my 82 before me spray painted the top black...i just started to sand the top today but it is taking the grain away and making it smooth i was wondering if the top is supposed to be smooth or grainy and what i should do now...thanks

I don't know any good way to sand it down with out losing the "grain". I think its just on there for looks and collecting dirt anyway.

Yeah, sanding will remove that. Remember the top is fiberglass so its finish coating was gelcoat. I'm not entirely sure what you would do with the top other than paint it or use something linke LineX on it.

as course as it is, couldnt you just use a few coats of primer over the black?

meaning, if you are going to repaint the top, you probably do not need to sand off the black, a few coats of primer should do the trick, the top should be pretty grainy and it will hold much better than a smooth surface

oh ok i see!! thank you alot! so the smooth side do i just put the primer over that too?
