my battery is good, and the people at autozone said the alt. is good to so the hooked a machine up to see if it was recharging when just running, and it was not at idle but when you rev it up higher it kinda does, with i charged battery i can go for a bout a month in summer, it is now winter so i dont know, without the bateryy completely dying. so do i just replace the alternator or check the wiring, but which ones and how will i know if it is not obvious??

thanks

Ok, if the battery has been checked and the alt is also OK then it's pretty much down to the cables & wires. Check the wires on the back of the alt & then check the battery cables. It might be time to cut off the old cable ends and splice on some new ones. Driving around in town & on the Hwy should be enuf to recharge it just fine unless the current just isn't getting there. By chance do you have any high-draw accessories like lights or stereo amps ? Off-road lights and winches should always be wired thru a relay instead of being wired directly to the battery.

For a quick check to see if the alternator is putting out, start the engine and then remove the ground cable from the battery. If the engine dies you have a alternator system problem, very possibly the voltage regulator, grounding or like Broncobill78 said, bad cables. The alternator is grounded through the case, so clean up the bolts that hold it and the bracket to the engine. From your description of the output test, I'd say the alternator is not functioning with full output, possibly a rectifier problem.

Good luck,

:)>-
