I jumped in my 89 eb that I just got a couple of months ago and the back window is smashed but still intact with no sight of damage to the outside or inside of the glass, has anyone ever had a problem where something in the tailgate has broken the window. It could just be that some punk smashed it but I would think that there would be a mark or chip on the glass

Even if I didnt turn the defrost on? I guess this speeds up my looking for a soft top, do the soft tops provide any sheilding from the cold in the winter?

im not sure about that. im sure there is some but you better have good heat:)

the problem with the rear defrost is a short. like if they dump tons of current into it. I have my tailgate wiring catch on fire before because of the wires that move with the tailgate getting pinched. it shorted out the whole truck, that wasnt fun.

the defrost may or may not be in but i know i unplugged mine along time ago.

I called a auto glass company and they said that he can have one in by tuesday for under $300 but advises not to do it until i find out what broke it, it said with those trucks it could be 1 of 100 things i.e rust in the tailgate, defrost, so i guess I have some work to do to find this problem

LOL I can relate a little story.

Years ago a few of my friends and I left another friends house. It was winter, and relatively cold outside.

I started my car and turned on my defrosters and my rear window shattered!

I couldn't believe it cause the engine hadn't warmed up yet, and the air coming out was still cold!? (I didn't have electric rear defrosters)

I got out of my car to look at it and asked my friend if he saw what happened. He was all apollogetic. He shot a bb gun at my tire and missed!

As I recall, there wasn't any telltale mark of where the bb hit, rather the safety glass shattered rather uniformally.

Does the fact that the window will not go down now mean anything?

the window mechanism is spring loaded(rather dangerous if your not careful). if your rollers are off the track or worn its possible it got in a bind and wont go down. the window partially aligns the rail at the bottom(bolts to the glass), when it shattered it could have disrupted that.

Does the motor sound like its trying to go and its some mechanical problem? or do you not see/hear anything going on ?

does your key switch still work? you can try to make it go down with the key while "persuading" it a bit.

This place has some good prices on the rear window. I recently got my Bronco and the rear window tint was so bad that I could even see out of it. The tint guy said he could not guaranty the rear heat would work after the tint replacement. I couldn't see out of it anyway so I told him to drive on. Anyway this place has the rear heated window for $169. Also check that the tailgate is closing tight to insure the safety switch is working correctly. I still find that funny they had to idiot proof the window.
