Hello all,

I am so excited about being part of a community like this!

Anyway, I just inherited a 79 Bronco Custom and I have to say it is freakin sweet!

My question to you guys is this...

I am a computer guy, but I am not the typical engineer type that can't do anything that takes common sense. I live on a farm and do all kinds of other construction/outddor related repairs and such, but I have no engine/mechanics experience whatsoever. It is very intimidating to me but I desperately want to learn and work on this beast myself.

What would you guys recommend in order to start from scratch to learn the funamentals of auto-mechanics? And then be able to begin trouble-shooting issues I run into without having to call a mechanic all the time?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Steven

For starters, pick-up a Chilton or Haynes manual at any parts store & put it in the "1 seat library" ..... you can always get an extensive/expensive one later on.

Most everything is a 1-5 banana job...(any monkey can do it) with the exception of internal eng., trans., transf. case, & front & rear pumpkins.

Most auto mech. work/rules are; It goes back the oposite of the way it came apart, ( except for torn knuckles & smashed fingers) :(( only cleaner. ('cause all the dirt etc. will be on your hands & in the "cuts")

Folks will be leary of shaking your hand for the rest of your life..!

Actually, it's the most fun you can have with your pants on.. :p /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Plus you get to take it out & play with it...I mean drive it to the playground... I mean, .....you know what I mean...

HTH..

great hobby so have fun,

Bob

I would suggest the manuals, to start. Then just get into some minor mods/repairs. I rebuilt my first auto. trans. in my '78 Bronco by getting the manual, reading it 3 or 4 times, then taking it out and doing it. That was a few years, and miles back....still going strong. Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions, there are folks here, and other places, who have alot of experience and would be happy to help you through it. :)>-

Sounds great, I really appreciate you guys. I will soon post some pics of my Bronco so you guys can let me know what I have gotten myself into. :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Although, I will ask you guys a quick question. The badge on my Bronco says Bronco Custom. I have been reading a lot of talk about Rangers/XLTs/Ranger II etc., what is mine?
