What kind of paint do I use. I painted a jeep top gloss black with a brush a couple of years ago and it turned out nice . But the Bronco top has a little smoother finsh. I want to go with white to cut down on the heat. Do I need primer? Do I use laytex? Has anyone else painted one with a brush?

Haven't painted one with a brush, but have used both the rattlecans and spray gun. Sand and prep the top like normal. It may not last as long as on metal though, but it's your only real option if the paint/gelcoat is faded . Check the link to "Miesk5 Hompage" in the Tech Articles forum for more info, JSM84

I'd use a small trim roller on the top, since it's a textured finish. Then you can finish the edges with a small brush. That's what I used on mine and it turned out great.

As far as paint type, you can use latex, but it won't last long out in the weather.

A longer lasting option is an oil-based enamel. It dosen't need to be automotive paint, just a good quality enamel from one of the discount stores.

You don't necessarily need to primer it before painting, just scuff up the surface with 320 sandpaper (wet) or a scuff pad. If you're going white over white, it should look real good; if you're covering a darker color, you may need two coats.

Good luck.
