Hi everyone. I am new to this forum. I have a 71 EB. I have had it for almost 7 years now. But due to a divorce and the navy it has been stored with my parents. Up until about two weeks ago. I now have it back with me and am in a possition to do something with it. It is all orginial. It is un cut no rust or anything like that. It still has the 3 speed coulum shift tranny in it. The only thing not orginial about it is the engine. It has a fairly new 302 in it. I am wanting to put in a four speed tranny in it and do some other things to it. I would like it be a street truck with some little 4x4ing. Any thoughts on what kind of tranny to put in it and stuff like that.

Dwain,

U.S Navy and proud!!!!

depending on how good the condition is, if it is rust and dent free, I would seriously hesitate on cutting it. You can put a 3.5" lift on it and go with a 31" tire no problems. As far as the 4 speed goes, the easiest swap is an NP435. I did an easy write up on this swap a while back.

You can also go with a T-18, which is a similar swap, but the T-18 is a longer transmission and you will have to buy the adapter for it. If you have the money, I would even go so far as to go with the 5-speed installation. But as far as the NP435/T-18, the NP has a lower 1st gear is the main difference, not much though.

Dwain,

4 speed conversions are quickly becoming a thing of the past!!

If you have the money to do the swap, do a little reserach on the transmissions available to use, you may find that a 5 speed is the way to go.

Check out advance adaptors, Jeffs Bronco graveyard, BC broncos, Toms, etc... they will have all the info that you will need.

The J**p NV 3550 (TJ) has a 4:1 first gear and overdrive fifth, the adaptors keep the trans at the same length as the 3 speed, no other driveline mods are needed.
