4.11's or 4.56's?

I'm running 35's and I want to know if 4.11 gears are deep enough or do I need to go lower, maybe 4.56's. More on road driving than off, but hopefully that will change soon, so let me know what you think. Off road driving will consist of hill climbs, trails, some mud, no rocks, (i'm in louisiana). thx

You should use 4:56 to keep the RPM's up with a 35" tire. Hill climbs and mud need power and gears will do it for you. 4:10 would be fine for lots of freeway driving but not stop and go type driving. Plus when you go off road and have the lower gears you will be glad you have them. If its set up for off road only then you would want 4:88's.

I run 5:89 with 38's.

SAC1001,in issue #15,there is a handy "GEAR FACTOR" chart,I dont know who compiled it but here goes....It rates the gear vs tires in three color codes ..blue...highway driving fuel economy,tan.....best overall/performance and economy...,purple.......most power and towing,reduced fuel economy.according to this,35 inch tires@ a ratio of 1 to 1@ 65 miles an hour4.11's are in the blue zone @ 2565 rpm's.4.56 and 4.88's..are in the tan zone @ 2845 and 3045 rpm's respectively.......good luck..I went with 4.27's and I wish I went with 4.56's

What about the recommendations for 33" tires? I still have stock gears with 33's, and need to change. I was thinking 4.11's for best combination (corresponding to purple above), but realize that 4.56's are needed to keep the same gearing as with the stock tires. Brian

BMBlauvelt, what are your original gears? are they 3.50s or are they 3.73s? For close to original 3.50 ratio a 4.11 is good. That is what I am running w/33s and I got no problems. My original gears were 3.50 and the 4.11 seems to be very close to what I remember the original gear/tire combo was. For 3.73 then you can only go over it with 4.56s. Though, I did see somewhere that someone had 4.30/4.27 something like that in stock for the 9"/D44
