I have a running 351W sitting in an older F150. Is there enough reasons to swap the 302 out with the 351. Was not sure how much more tourqe and horsepower I would be getting. I know there are many of you guys out there that have done this. What do you think. The only thing I need to do to the 351W is a little carb clean up. Thanks for you input.

Depends on what "floats your boat."

Is the 302 a "run-out"..?

I never get past 1/4 throttle climbing hills with my 'lil I-6. Any more & I'd be air-borne...

The FS trucks are heavy & the 302 is a bit anemic for them.

If you're drag racing on the street then go for it..!!

If you're a 4x4'r then gear it for your type of trails.

Cooling that 351 will be your biggest task after installation.

All I plan an using this buggy for in playing in the swamp. Hunting and fishing, and just playing. It has 14.5x35x15s on it. The 302 has not been tested by me yet, but it cranks up and purrs like a kitten. Maybe you are right, just keep the 302 in there, and maybe use the 351 on the other bronco frame I have. Make a swamp monster out of that one. Thanks, I appreciate you guys opinions. I know there are a lot of you out there that have been there, done that. Lot easier to learn from other people's mistakes than make them yourself. thanks

David,I've never had a 351 in an E.B.,but I had one in a '79.It seems like a lot of guys swear by them,to me a 302 is plenty, and a gear change really makes a difference in my book.I had a straight six ,with 4.88's and it did great, but as you know if you play in the mud sometimes that horse power,(and a good locker)makes a big difference when you start to bog ,and need to let the mud fly.I really dont think its crucial for rock climbing, but I,m sure theres lots of guys that will argue that point.

I swapped out a 170 for a 302 with a few mods. Have 4.10s and 31x11.50s, haven,t had a jeep go by me since! I suggest you run it for awhile and see for yourself. Give her a lickin!

Thanks Guys,

I really appreciate the input. I think I will keep the 302 in there for now and see what happens. How do you tell exactly what ratio rear end you have? I think that is something I need to know. I also want to put lockers in the buggy if I can scrape up a little extra money. Any ideas on lockers that will work without selling the house to get them? Thanks,

David

Big "mud" (swamp, etc) does req. mega HP

But, don't forget a Suzuki 4 popper had the 1st "Top Truck Challange" won until the spotter got the winch cable wrapped around the front wheel/axle..! Had to go under water/mud to free it. Cost them enough time to lose the overall by seconds as I recall. <_<

Well,of course if you have your third member out ,you can devide the ring teeth count ,by the pinion tooth count, that gives you the ratio. There are sometimes tags on the rear end, that tell you the ratio, but Ive seen rear ends changed, and the old tag still there.Another way is to...let me see if I can splain this correctly.....if you have your truck on jack stands, with the wheels free....mark your axle with a chalk mark, have someone watch it,turn the wheel one complete revolution exactly. If youre axle went around about 3.5 times, you have 3.50 gears. If it went around alittle more than 4 times...4.11 gears and so on.As far as lockers,I,m running ARB's and like them alot ,but they are spendy.Good luck.
