302 main seals

My front and rear main seals leak (2qts a day).

The engine runs strong, no smoke, but it does have some lifter clatter.

How hard is it to change these seals? Can I do it without dropping the 3 speed or pulling the engine? (I do have a 3 1/2" lift) Is it worth doing this on a 33 year old motor?

The only way to change the rear main seal is drop the oil pan if you are able to. Remove the rear main cap and with a punch or something similar gently tap against one side of the seal (as though you wanted to push it up into the block) and it will spin itself out following the crankshaft. The new one goes in the same as removeal, make sure it is well lubed and in the right way. Only works one way, but will install both ways so you have to watch that. The front is easy. Remove the timing chain cover, with a punch, drive out the old seal and gently tap in the new one til it sits flush. Oil the rubber surface and reassemble.

i thought i had that same problem but broncos are really bad about blowing out oil pan gaskets so change the oil pan gasket first then see if it still leaks it worth a shot they usually go out in the same spots where the main seals are goodluck
