i have a 1992 bronco and am looking for to get 2 to 3 inch lift and i was wondering if there were any alternatives to the expensive lift kits they offer. such as buying each part seperatly. i know i could buy 4 front shocks, 2 coil springs, and rear leafs. or would it work to just buy spacers for the front coil springs and blocks for the leafs and just buy new shocks? or is it better to just buy all new parts without and spacers or blocks? alsois there any other work besides the strictly suspension work that i will need to do. such as pitman arms, or lengthening any cables?

please help, thanks

I have a '92 XLT that I am also going to be doing a 2" lift on and here is my plan.

Front:

2" Axle Pivot Drop Bracket Kit

4-King Pre-Runner Coil-Over Shocks (eliminating the single primary)

Steering drag-link switch from bottom to top of steering knuckle

Rear:

Rear Spring Mounts for a F-350

Axle Angle Shims on Spring Perches (to correct drive angle)

New Rear Shocks for 2" lift (brand undecided yet)

This is a pretty stout system from what I have heard from others. Switching the steering from the bottom to the top of the knuckles also bring the drag link up and out of harms way in front of the diff, or you could keep the set-up where it's at and get a 2" drop pitman arm. By using the longer F-350 Spring mounts instead of lift block will retain the stock springs and eliminate the block (which I have seen too many of end up being the death of a lift). At a 2" lift, most everything should still have the needed length, but you will want to check everything once everything is installed before you do any serious wheeling.

I know it's a chunk of change up front but it's almost *always* cheaper to buy the lift as a kit rather than trying to buy the pieces seperately. You might pay less each time you go to the counter but in the end you'll have paid more for it overall. What you CAN do is to save & buy the lift and then get any "optional" pieces but again, a lot of kits today include everything you'll want for a better price as a package deal.

With a 2"-3" lift you can probably get away with just the lift itself but it's marginal. Generally speaking once you get above 2" you need the extras and truth be told, *nobody* likes likes a 5000lb truck that darts around the road all on it's own. The dropped pitman arm will help and yeah you'll probably want those longer brake lines (with the lift you'll also get more suspension travel and at full extension the stock lines are gonna look like guitar strings). I'd spend the $$$ on the extras like an adjustable drag-link and either radius-arm drop brackets or longer arms. The lift kit mfg's AREN'T just trying to vacuum your pockets with those extra goodies, every optional part is made for a reason and most of the time that reason is to get your steering back. When you're installing the lift take the time to look at your bushings as well since this will be the time to replace them. The poly bushings are much better than the worn-out rubber ones ever were.
