Power Steering Question

@miesk5 or anyone else....I’ve got a small leak (1 to 2 drops about the size of a nickel) coming from the steering gearbox of my 95 5.8. The fluid in the reservoir is a brownish color (see attached photo of fluid on the paper towel). I bought some Lucas Power Steering stop leak but it’s a red color. Probably a stupid question here, but I’m no professional mechanic. Is it ok to add to the Lucas to the fluid currently in the power steering reservoir? Also what’s in there isnt the type f fluid that is recommended. Can I suck this fluid out and add type f or stick with what is in it with the stop leak? Any help is appreciated.

What you are seeing is just dirty fluid. You can suck it out, or drain and refill if you want to clean it up some.

You can add the stop leak at any time whether you decide to change fluid or not.

So if I suck out the fluid and for example it is 8 oz of fluid do I replace with 8 oz of Lucas stop leak or do I put in 8 oz of new Type F fluid and then add the stop leak in addition to the new fluid? Or do I need to go half and half? Don’t want to overfill.

I would suck out what you can and replace it with lucas, Isn't there a dipstick on the cap?

Yes. It is currently not low so I wanted to make sure before I did anything. This is out of my realm of expertise. Ha!
