Diagnostic Routines Symptom Flow Charts — Chart 15

Symptom
OASIS Number
Poor Fuel Economy
622000

Note: Since driving habits can have a significant influence on fuel economy, verify the concern before starting an in-depth diagnosis. Also, the following external factors could contribute to "poor fuel economy" conditions:

  • Stop/Go City Driving
  • Tire Pressure/Size
  • Vehicle Loads (Trailer Towing, etc.)
  • Extended Winter Warm-up Conditions
  • High Speed Driving
  • Axle Ratio
  • Speedometer Gear Ratio
  • Road/Weather Conditions
  • After Market Add-ons
  • Short-Run Operations
  • Customer Expectations/Driving Habits

Diagnostic Routines Symptom Flow Charts — Chart 16

Symptom
OASIS Number
Emissions Compliance
623000

Note: Canada and some states or metropolitan areas in the United States require periodic Idle Emission Tests. All Ford products have been designed to pass these tests. If a Ford product fails an Idle Emission Test, it is probable that 1) the engine temperature was not warm and stabilized before the test, or 2) the vehicle had idled excessively before the test.

Before to starting any service, complaints of Idle Emission Test failure should be verified.

The following example contains most of the emissions measurement modes of the current state inspection/maintenance test procedures:

  1. Ensure that the engine is at normal operating temperature and that all accessories are turned off.
  1. Read emissions at idle.
  1. Run engine at 2500 ± 300 rpm.
  1. Read emissions within 30 seconds.
  1. Return engine speed to idle.
  1. Read emissions within 30 seconds.
If any emission components are replaced, perform the following before repeating the State Emission Test procedure:

  1. Clear Keep Alive Memory (KAM)—Refer to EEC-IV Quick Test Appendix (Section 5A).
  1. To relearn appropriate Adaptive Learning, run engine at 2500 rpm for one minute and idle engine for two minutes.

Symptom

Exhaust System Concerns

—Odor (Sulphur/"Rotten Egg" Smell)
403596

Note: A slight sulphur smell may be normal. Catalysts with less than 5-10 thousand miles (new vehicle or replaced catalyst) are more likely to have a sulphur smell concern due to the highly active state of new catalysts. If no problem is found, replacing the catalyst may actually make the symptom worse.

Symptom
OASIS Number
Starting Concerns
—No Start/Normal Crank
603300

Note: Extended cranking because of a "No Start" can load the exhaust system with raw fuel, damaging the catalytic converter after the engine starts. After the "No Start" condition has been repaired, disconnect the secondary air supply, run the engine until surplus fuel is used up, and reconnect the secondary air supply.
