Clacking when idling in first gear

Weather just started to warm up here in Wisconsin and sounds like the truck is running dry all of a sudden. there’s a new clacking sound when the truck is at rest and running. Seemingly no issues in below zero weather this winter so I was excited for this warmer weather and now I’m a little nervous. The trans is acting funnier too, just taking a bit more gas to change gears it seems. I can try to get some audio up of the sound after work but if anyone has ideas let me know.

Has the transmission been serviced recently? Many of my recent transmsion issues have been caused by old fluid that needed to be changed out.

Haven’t checked the fluid recently and don’t have any idea how recently it was serviced. can you get clacking or ticking from that system?

Yo Bronconnoisseur,
E4OD Transmission Control Indicator Light (TCIL) is a LED with an overdrive on/off switch at end of the Transmission shifter stalk; flashing OD light is an indication of a transmission related trouble code in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
Is it flashing while driving?

Get a free OBDII CODE TEST @ MOST PARTS STORE EXCEPT @ AUTOZONE.

in case anyone wants an update....steering wheel seized up on the way home from work. coasted in neutral downhill right to an auto shop. i shut it down and started it up fine, no steering action though. popped the hood and got out. then watched every ounce of antifreeze empty onto the pavement and saw a belt off completely. towed to mechanic

Guess I am late to the party, I was going to say Belt tensioner often goes along with people calling it clacking sound.

turns out it was just the water pump. said I got lucky since some hoses were just hanging somewhere it sounded like. guess that’s how there was a total dumping of my antifreeze. but ya, was gonna be $250 but he went ahead and replaced other parts within coolant system so it came out to $470 only. o got a great shop that I’ll hate to move away from this summer!

a flush'n fill of proper coolant (clean out block/radiator/heater core), H2O pump, thermostat, rad cap, ck hoses'n belts, idler pulley(s), any temp sensors/idiot lght/gauge changes needed are all 1st. Nxt onto the steering as separate issue.
Could the steering just been lack of belt to PS pump when H2O pump seized? Just lack of PS assistance due to stall out/power died?

I think the steering difficulty was due to to the belt coming off. I was still able to turn 90°, it was just very tough to do. And I think some of what you listed is what my mechanic tackled. the receipt lists : water pump, lower oil cooler , radiator hose, belt, hose clamps, antifreeze.

Sounds like a clutch pack might me going. I would drop the pan and see how much junk (greyish/black) sediment is in the bottom. My AOD went south and I did an overhaul myself really easily on my 90 4x4.

since the parts listed above were replaced, the truck is making a faint whine/squeal sound while it’s running, and it will go away when I let off the gas if i’m going fast enough , like 35 40 mph. any ideas? is my belt just so brand spanking new that it quite literally squeaks?

could B too tight or loose. Now run a lill...X 2 recheck. Same w/new exh - after a few runns, x2 ck for a retighten. Lug nuts? etc
However, the sound seems like not enuff PS fluid in the pump? Ck dip stick of PS pump right on the housing?

how much have you driven it? If there was any oil or coolant spilled it might take some time to burn that off the belt and pulleys.

Some belts are noisy

Otherwise, hard to tell, could be faulty tensioner, bearing going bad in alternator or something like that.

locate noise.
B very careful (long hair, flappy sleaves, etc) but if U must...some take a 2, 3 ft piece of hose to the ear, run the other around to locate sound. Our eyes can someXs locate sounds incorrectly by where we look (Brain "Oh yeah. Its coming from...mmm - right there where I can see it."). But here U may not need that extra tool. It should B obvious. Mechanics: good use of the body (sight, sound, smell, feel, and yes, I use taste upon occasion) 8^ )

That,s why I don,t like power steering or power brakes. The electronic ignition can cause a thrill seeker or bad accident too. You can take STP oil treatment and put it in a manual steering box and make it steer alot easier. Glad you never had a accident.
