Help. I'm ready to install repair bearings in the rear but the Timken repair bearing says for sterling axle. I can't determine if I have sterling axles. Did the 95 Eddie Bauer come stock with sterling axles?

yo C,

Our Broncos were built w/Ford 8.8" rear differentials

If you are only owner, then the 8.8 is in there.

Sterling axle is also know as the 10.50

Identification Based on VIN, Door Jamb Label, Build Sheet (Ford 999 Report), Paint Color Code, VECI Label, Transmission/Differential Pan & Gasket Sizes/Shapes, etc.; "... made a mistake 15 years ago by telling someone to use the Driver's side label to ID their Rear Differential (axle, pumpkin type, etc.); turned out that a previous owner had swapped a Dana 60 in place of the stock 8.8..."

Excerpts;

Photo 1 - The 9” rear ends have a removable “hog-head” center carrier and is about 10” from the bottom to the top stud. The 9” was introduced in 1957 and ran to mid 80's.

Photo 3 - 8.8” rear’s have a ten bolt inspection plate on the back that’s about 10” from the center of the top bolt to the bottom bolt center. The 8.8” first saw service in the 79 Crown Vic. and in 1980 for the F100/150.

Photo 7 - The 10.25" used on some Light duty F250 and Heavy duty F150's, 12 bolts on cover and top to bottom bolts are about 11 5/8" apart.

Dana 44 use as front axle on 4x4's also as rear axles on some late 70 F100's. Has 10 bolts, normally has a fill plug on the cover and top to bottom bolt head centers are about 9 1/4".

I put one of the repair bearings in but it stuck out about .25 inch. Is this the way they work or did I get the wrong repair bearing? It's an 8.8 and the top number on the axle tag says S837J. It's a Timken Repair bearing.

yo,

I haven't done this on any Ford 8.8; only GMs in past.

When the C-lock is removed, the axle can be pulled from the housing

Remove the old axle seal, using a suitable prytool

Install a new seal using a suitable seal installer tool and malle

Since on the 8.8 the bearing runs directly on the axle, the repair bearing is supposed to run on a new part of the axle since a bad bearing would mess up the axle.   It will therefore stick out further and typically use it's own type of seal.

Ah thank you. Wanted to confirm that and you did. About  .25 inch +-? I shall proceed and later do the whole 9 yards,

axles, bearings and differential etc. Thanks again for everyones help.  Also it has an inner seal closest to the diff in the tube and the outer seal. It seems almost like a sealed bearing. I can't see how the lubricating fluid will get to the axle bearing as has been represented to me. It's a Timken repair bearing. Thanks.

That sounds different than the one I have used.   Does it have an inner race?   Didn't the one you took out run directly on the axle?   Maybe you don't have an 8.8.

It's an 8.8. it's a Timken repair bearing. They are both in and I'm filling with oil and test run tomorrow. I'll update on my results. And the ones taken out ran on the axle. The Autozone part number is TRP1559TV. Take a look and tell me what you see.

It's all back together. Seems okay for now. Test drive okay. Now to lay in parts for diff, ring/pinion etc.

The picture for that number shows a bearing with no inner race and no inner seal.   While it is not called a repair bearing it does look like the ones I have used.

Ok thanks. The axles have the tiniest bit of pitting and the differential gears had some. A noise from the rear but will get by for now. I've replaced all the bearing in the front wheels.Think I''ll do some engine work now as it seems to be running rich. Slow but sure wins the race. Thanks for your input.
