This may seem like a dumb question but I'd like to know. In a full time all wheel drive bronco if you pull the front drive shaft will it do anything to the transfer case, and will it increase gas mileage? The reason I ask is I'm driving from Arizona to New Jersey and trying to save a little on fuel. any help would be helpful. Thanks

I have NEVER heard of a full time AWD Bronco. I thought they were always selectable.

You mean you have been driving around in 4x4 all the time? Shifting it to 2WD should be all you need to do. If the drive shafts continue to turn with it in 2WD and the hubs unlocked, then you have a hub problem. That would put a lot of extra drag on the system. Broncos have part time 4WD and are not supposed to be left in 4x4.

well I can't shift it into 2wheel drive I don't have that option. if you look on my profile you will see a picture of my shifter knob. All I have is 4hi 4hi lock, 4lo, 4lo lock. and neutral. In 78 there was an option to get what they called Full Time 4wheel drive and unfortuatly thats what I have. From what I've been told it has the np203 transfer case.

You cant always trust the shifter knob. Its easy to replace a knob. I'm not sure of the 78 transfer case shifting pattern but in mine to put the shifter all the way towards the dash for 2 hi. If its different then hopefully someone that knows will speak up. Try shifting to where I said 2 hi is and see if 4 wheel disengages. I'm not saying you dont know what your talking about but yours is the only awd Bronco I have heard of. I am truly curious if it is in fact a full time 4wd Bronco. A shifter knob is not enough to convince me. I remember having this conversation with you before. Do you have auto hubs too?

I can't control the hubs. but I have found a website that said they came with that option and i was going through my glove box the other day and found the original sales slip for the truck and even on there it says full time all wheel drive. That year did come with the option. If I can find the website I will attach it here. but would you be able to answer the original question? would it make any difference if I were to pull the front driveshaft?

Don't waist your time, not enough of a gain to worry about. I figured out the diff, I had one like yours and tried it. 10 gal on a 2500 mile trip. You would save more by slowing down 5mph for 3 or 4 hours than you would by taking of the shaft and having to run in 4 hi lock.

ok. so just driving slower would do the trick. Thanks for the help. Seabronc and yardape I didn't believe it either until I really started looking and realized I couldn't take it out of 4wheel drive.. I thought to myself what kind of 78 truck doesn't come out of 4wheel drive and thought something was wrong until I did a little research and went through all the gears to find out 2wheel drive didn't exist.

Well that's way more convincing than a shifter knob. Thank you for being patient and taking the time to educate

I think this is the only truck that I've done the most research on a vehicle before... so I always have questions and will have a lot more. but thanks for the reply
